Only a few of us—about 2% of the population—can get by on less than 5 hours of sleep every night without a problem. The rest of us that try are just sleep deprived.
Forget Numbers for Now
Focusing on the “perfect” amount of sleep can be counter-productive. Our sleep needs change seasonally, as we age, and depend on how much stress we are under as well. Only you can tell how much you need, so focus your attention on how you feel.
Some people are morning larks and others are night owls. In all cases, when you are well rested you feel like you are at your best, physically and emotionally, and your energy arcs predictably throughout the day.
Signs that you are Well Rested
- You wake up easily at the alarm, or often, just minutes before the alarm.
- You don’t nod off during a boring call or meeting in the middle of the day.
- You don’t “need” a coffee to make it through the slow part of the workday.
- You feel relaxed and sleepy in the evening, but not completely drained.
